Today concluding my hat post and the fascinating history behind it……………
From the 1930s to the 1950s New York had become the worlds leading Millinery capital. Hats were never more popular and Hollywood elite, socialites and anyone and everyone were rarely seen in public without one.
By the 1950s “Ready To Wear” clothing had arrived and robbed the Milliners of their part in the fashion world. All types of clothing became cheaper including Head Wear and became mass produced. In the 1960s hats were over shadowed by the popularity of Wigs and hairdressers, it was the decade of the celebration of the Hair and women all over the world embraced it. Hairdressers ,wig makers ,big hair, big rollers were order of the day and so sadly the hat became redundant during that decade.
Roll on the 1980s and public figures like Princess Diana, who enthusiastically embraced the Hat and so it was back in action once again! During the 1980s and 1990s the Hat was given a revival and the Milliner was reinvented once again.
Many new Hat Designers emerged because of this , making the 1990s especially a very innovative and productive period for the revival of Hat wearing. Today hats are as popular as ever before and all styles are worn and embraced . Weddings ,Race Meetings and Public events have made them hugely popular. These upmarket events have ensured the continued success of the Hat Designer or Milliner. Designers like Philip Treacy , Rachel Trevor Morgan , Martha Lynn (former student of Philip Treacy) and Edel Ramberg are forging the way forward.

I’ve learnt so much about the history of fashion as told through hats. It’s fascinating to see how they have been subject to trends throughout the centuries.
